THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Many commentators of the Geeta have interpreted that the giving up of the fruits of one's actions is advised because one has no right or authority to desire the fruits. This is a great blunder. When one has the right to engage in action, one also has the right over the fruits of that action; no one can deny or refuse this. But the doer can, out of one's own free will and determination, refuse to be affected by the result, whether favourable or unfavourable. The Lord has said in the Geeta, 'refuse the fruit' (maa phaleshu), which means, the deed does yields results, but the doer should not do it with the results in view. If Krishna's intention was to say that the doer has no right over the fruits of action, He would have said, 'It is fruitless' or 'na phaleshu,' (na, meaning no). To engage oneself in karma, knowing well that the result will follow, and yet being unattached to it or being unconcerned with it, is the sign of purity.

Persisting in the spiritual discipline of ignoring the body means turning away from the temptations of the senses, that is, overcoming the six inner enemies – desire, anger, greed, attachment, pride and malice. Anger turns a person into a drunken brute. The other impulses are equally vicious. Seek only salutary action that will win His grace. Eat only Saathvik (simple, pure, vegetarian) food, that does not disturb the equanimity you earn from your spiritual activities. Do not break the even tenor of your spiritual practices. Remind yourself, how the great saint Ramadas never gave up his Naamasmarana (Contemplation of the Lord) in spite of the travails of living in jail. If you immerse yourself in Deha Tathwa, body consciousness, you start declining. But you can be really healthy and happy only when you are immersed in the universal and essential nature of the Self - Aatma Tathwa.

If you have an eye on the fruits of your actions, you are liable to be affected by worry, anxiety and restlessness. You may ask: "If the fruits have to be given up, how can one manage to live?" Let Me ask you - Why this weakness of heart, this nervousness? He who has assured, 'Yogakshemam vahamyaham' (I will take care of all your needs - worldly and spiritual) will certainly look after that. He will give the wherewithal and the means. The seeker (Karmayogi) who has learnt the secret of action (Karma) combined with sacrifice (Phala thyaga) should have Sama buddhi (equanimity), more than Sanga buddhi (mind attached to the world). Sanga buddhi leads one to think: "This action is mine; its results are due to my endeavours. I am the person entitled to it". Such thoughts bind the doer. Krishna in the Geeta declares, "Samathwam yogamuchyathe" (The end result of all spiritual practices is the attainment of equanimity). One should rise above this Sanga buddhi and try to attain Samathwam.

Always have the meaning and purpose of life in view. Experience that purpose and meaning. You and the Absolute Eternal Divine are One. You are not the individual, the temporary and the particular. Always act in conformity with this. Persist in your meditation until the awareness that you are performing meditation or a spiritual practice disappears. Forget the ego, let it melt and merge with all its layers of consciousness. There are some, who while meditating, strike at the mosquitoes that pester them! No, you must immerse yourself in meditation until you transcend all the physical and mental urges and impulses. Valmeeki, the author of Ramayana, was covered by the anthill that grew over him. People discovered his existence by the chants of the name "Rama" that emanated from the mound. Ignore the body (Deha) so that you may discover its Indweller (Dehi). Do not get engrossed in outer finery; instead delve deep and discover the inner splendour.

PRASANTHI UPDATE - Paschim Banga West Bengal Parthi Yatra

Paschim Banga (West Bengal) Parthi Yatra

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011
Over 200 youth from the North Eastern State of Paschim Banga arrived in Prasanthi Nilayam on 13 Dec 2011 for a 3 day prilgrimage to the Divine Abode. The youth got the opportunity to perform a music programme in the Divine Presence, this evening. After the state vice president, Sri Sujit Prasal Lahiri offered a flower to Bhagawan, the narrator, Sri Brijesh Bamalwa presented the youth to Bhagwan and expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity.

They presented a bouquet of six songs commencing with a song on His Works and fittingly concluding with a song of Resolve, inspiring one and all to face all obstacles and tread the path directed by Him. Praying to him to bless all to become His worthy instruments and torch bearers of His Divine Mission, they drew the programme to a close.

Clothes were distributed to all the participants and even as Prasadam was shared with the entire assembly.

"I Am Not Going Anywhere…"

Profound words – "I Am Not Going Anywhere" – that came so unexpected and out of context from the Divine in human vesture, left author Diana Baskin clueless for quite sometime until it dawned upon her, the greater truth, after Bhagawan physically passed on. Read on Diana Baskin's reminscence of the momentous revelation, published in Sanathana Sarathi, November 2011.
When Swami left His body, He left a deep empty space in my heart and since that unforgettable day I have asked Him to fill the steady pain of emptiness with His Love.
Swami, the Heart Core of our Life
Swami became my Guru when I first came to India in 1969, taking on the task of teaching me the principles of a spiritual life by building a solid foundation rooted in Dharma. Later, He became my Mother, taking over the task of nurturing, acceptance and unconditional love. Finally in 1979, Swami took the role of Father by introducing me to my husband, Robert, performing our marriage ceremony and extending His strong hand of support and gentle loving guidance throughout our marriage.
Swami was the heart core of our life. For the past 40 years, our life centred solely upon Him, and the anticipation of our trips to India that brought us in His physical presence was our nourishment. My husband and I were devastated and heartbroken as we lost all at once our Guru, our Mother and our Father.
But Swami did not teach us to be weaklings and even in the midst of sorrow His teachings rushed to my side, giving me strength and support while gently reminding me that there was a limit to everything.
When the husband of our friend died, Swami said to her that she could mourn his death but only for a short time; after that, she needed to let go of her sorrow. Otherwise, she could not lead a purposeful and useful life.
Last Words of Swami
I understood intellectually that to honour Swami and His teachings, I needed to put them into practice, be a master of my emotions and keep my focus on positive and constructive thoughts. While this helped to some extent, it was not enough. I longed to re-establish the direct heart-to-heart link with Swami that gives joy to life.
Swami had not only foreseen the problem I would encounter but in His infinite compassion had given the solution, unbeknownst to me, shortly before leaving His physical body.
One morning, after Bhajans as Swami was returning to His residence, His car stopped in front of me and as the driver lowered the window, Swami motioned for me to come forward. His voice was very faint and I had to lean into the car and read His lips to grasp His words. At the end of our brief conversation, He said something so unusual and out of context that I had to ask Him to repeat it. These were the last words Swami ever spoke to me.
For the year that followed, I pondered His words and questioned their meaning but failed to find the reason why He voiced them at that time nor could I find any sort of veiled connotation they might imply. It was not until a few weeks after Swami passed, in the midst of great sorrow and mourning that like a thunderbolt from the heavens it hit me! Not only did I understand what He meant from the deeper perspective of Advaita but a mere remembrance had the power to re-establish the precious heart-to-heart link and fill my heart with love. The powerful words of truth, love and wisdom that Swami sweetly whispered were: "I am not going anywhere."
